Single Gene Crosses

Although the material within the following links does not provide a full coverage of Mendelian Inheritance, it does provide the basis for developing an understanding of how to deal with Genetic Crosses. Before starting, make sure you are familiar with the basics of a genetic cross in diploid species. A good place to do this is at the The Nature Education Scitable page. In particular, Figure 5 at this link is a good overview.

Once you have reviewed the basics of allele segregation and how progeny genotypes are generated in a cross you are ready to go ahead with this material. From here on we will not be drawing Punnett squares to diagram crosses, we will just notate the parental genotypes to determine progeny genotypes. If you find this difficult at first you can always draw squares to help yourself but it is good to move away from them as soon as possible. You should become familiar with the following:
